Students are encouraged to bring along any tools. For students wishing to ‘set up’ for woodturning, I will be pleased to provide advice on sharpening. I will also provide unbiased advice on lathes, chucks and tools.
The courses listed below are only guidelines and can be tailored to individual needs.
Student numbers are usually two per course with a maximum of three by prior arrangement. This ensures the student receives maximum amount of benefit from the course. Duration of the course can be 1, 2, 3 or 5 days and will include a 3 course lunch, refreshments and all course materials.
The fee for private tuition is £100.00 per person per day. A deposit of £50.00 is required upon booking a course.
BEGINNER’S COURSE
The Beginner’s Course covers health and safety issues, sharpening, finishing and the use of six basic woodturning tools:
- roughing out gouge
- skew
- spindle gouge,
- parting tool
- bowl gouge
- round nose scraper
You will complete four projects which will include a lidded box and a bowl. You will learn sharpening techniques using a jig, jam chucking and the use of the long grind bowl and spindle gouge.
This course is structured so that students will gain the confidence and ability to return to their workshop and further develop the basic skills.
INTERMEDIATE COURSE
The Intermediate Course is designed to further develop the skills taught on the Beginner’s Course with more advanced tooling techniques including:
- Sheer cutting
- Tool grinding
- Platter turning
- Long-stemmed goblet
- Pens
- Turning wet wood
- Turning a box
- Design
SPECIALIST COURSES
A Specialist Course can include:
- Open or hollow forms
- End or long grain
- Thin-walled vessels
- Colour and texture
- Metal inlays
Special emphasis will be placed on design, shape, form, aesthetics, more advanced finishing, tooling techniques and problem solving.
Students can combine a Specialist Course with an Intermediate Course or tailor a Specialist Course as to personal requirements or to a particular project.
